Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sibiha said that Putin’s refusal of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy‘s proposal for direct peace talks has closed for the Kremlin the chance to exit the failing war on less painful terms. The corresponding post 6 June 2026 he published on the social network X.

The statement came against the backdrop of the Russian dictator effectively rejecting the possibility of a direct meeting with the President of Ukraine. As international media reported, Putin said he currently sees no point in such a meeting and reiterated his military objectives regarding Ukraine.

Andrii Sibiha emphasized: after the Kremlin’s rejection of peace the situation for Russia will only worsen. According to him, Russian battlefield losses will grow, defeats will become increasingly humiliating, the economy will sink deeper into crisis, and taxes, inflation and unemployment will hit the most vulnerable Russians ever harder. The minister also said that there are no safe places left in Russia that could avoid the impact of Ukraine’s long-range sanctions. At the same time, their intensity, he said, will only increase.

Separately, Sibiha stressed international pressure. He believes that it will not ease, but on the contrary – become stronger. Among the tools of such pressure the minister named the use of frozen assets, travel bans and inevitable accountability for war crimes. According to the head of the MFA, all this is happening because the Kremlin dictator seeks to hold on to power at any cost and is ready to sacrifice his country’s future and the lives of millions for his mad illusions.

In effect Sibiha formulated the position of Kyiv like this: a diplomatic solution remains possible, but not on the Kremlin’s terms and not after prolonging the war without consequences for the aggressor. If Putin refuses direct peace now, then, according to the logic of Ukrainian diplomacy, the world must respond not with new pauses, but with stronger pressure and greater support for Ukraine.
