A daytime train in summer heat can become a real ordeal for passengers, especially for children, the elderly and those with health problems

Mykolaiv mayor Oleksandr Senkevych reported that today, June 2, 2026, he prepared an appeal to Ukrzaliznytsia regarding the schedule of the “Mykolaiv-Kyiv” train. The reason – the removal from the timetable of the night service, which had previously been the most convenient option for many passengers traveling to the capital.

According to the mayor, the train now runs daily, but only the daytime service remains in the schedule: departure from Mykolaiv in the morning and arrival in Kyiv in the evening. Previously there was an alternating night option every other day, which allowed people to leave after work and already be in the capital in the morning.

For Mykolaiv this is not just a matter of comfort. Thousands of people use this route every day: some go to work, some for medical treatment, to relatives or on business. That is why the night connection is critically important for part of the passengers.

Separately, Oleksandr Senkevych drew attention to the conditions of the daytime service in summer. In Mykolaiv the heat can reach 40 degrees, and if old carriages are put on the route, the journey turns into a serious test. It is especially difficult, he said, to travel on the second berth.

Under such conditions the daytime service becomes physically demanding for many passengers. This is felt most by the elderly, children and those with health problems.

At the same time, the mayor noted that he understands the difficult conditions in which Ukrzaliznytsia operates during the war: constant Russian shelling, risks to rolling stock and the need to make difficult decisions for the safety of passengers and railway workers.

In his appeal Oleksandr Senkevych emphasized that he asks Ukrzaliznytsia to find a solution that will take into account the needs of passengers on the “Mykolaiv-Kyiv” route.

“At the same time, I ask you to consider the possibility of restoring the night service or another solution that will take into account the needs of passengers. I am counting on constructive dialogue.”
