He killed a person, but won't go to prison: in Mykolaiv the driver received a "suspended sentence"
Almost 90 km/h in the city: court handed down a sentence to the driver after a pedestrian was killed
Central District Court of Mykolaiv issued a verdict against the driver of a Volkswagen Transporter, who fatally struck a pedestrian on Central Avenue. The decision was made on 7 May 2026 in the case under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – violation of traffic safety rules that caused the victim’s death.
The accident occurred on 19 July 2025 at around 05:40. The driver was traveling along Central Avenue from Sadova Street toward 6th Slobidska Street. According to the expert’s findings, the vehicle’s speed was between 87.38 and 96.58 km/h. Near house No. 171 the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was crossing the road at an unmarked location. From his injuries the man died at the scene. In court the driver fully admitted his guilt. He explained that he was driving to work and, according to him, the pedestrian ran out from the right side. After the crash the man stopped and called an ambulance and the police.
The injured party told the court that the accused had compensated material and moral damages, has no claims against him and asked not to impose a punishment involving real imprisonment. The court also took into account that the pedestrian violated the rules: he crossed the road outside a crosswalk, and at the signal-controlled crossing the traffic light was red for him.
The verdict also notes that the accused transferred 200,000 hryvnias in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These funds were part of the bail. In the end the driver was sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment, but was released from serving the sentence with probation for 2 years. The court did not deprive him of the right to drive. Also, the convict was ordered to pay 13,916 hryvnias 48 kopecks to cover the costs of the expert examinations. The verdict can still be appealed to the Mykolaiv Court of Appeal within 30 days.
