Lost consciousness after surgery: a patient died at a private clinic in Mykolaiv

Investigators are examining possible negligence by medical staff following a fatal incident

In Mykolaiv, the police are investigating the death of a 34-year-old woman who died in a private medical facility after a scheduled plastic surgery. This was reported by the Mykolaiv Oblast police.

According to law enforcement, May 10 2026 an ambulance crew contacted the emergency line 102 and reported the death of a patient at a private clinic. Police from the investigative-operational group of the Mykolaiv district police department. worked at the scene. It was preliminarily established that the day before, May 9, the woman underwent a scheduled surgical procedure. After the operation she was to remain in the medical facility under doctors’ supervision for several more days.

The next day, during a postoperative medical procedure the patient lost consciousness several times. Doctors provided her with emergency care and called “ambulance”, however they were unable to save the woman. The final cause of death is to be determined by a forensic medical examination. Investigators questioned employees of the medical facility. A forensic expert collected, and the investigator seized, physical evidence from the scene.

Under the procedural guidance of the Mykolaiv City District Prosecutor’s Office, a criminal proceeding has been initiated under Part 1 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – improper performance of professional duties by a medical or pharmaceutical worker. The article’s sanction provides for up to two years imprisonment. Currently the police are conducting the necessary investigative actions and will appoint additional examinations. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
