A bloody day in Kyiv: the shooter who opened fire on people and hid in a supermarket has been neutralized

In Kyiv during the day on 18 April 2026 an extraordinary incident occurred that literally paralyzed part of the Holosiivskyi district. According to the capital’s police, an unknown man opened fire on people. Police units and KORD special forces were immediately dispatched to the scene, after which a special operation to detain the attacker began.

At first law enforcement reported at least one dead and several wounded. Later the mayor Vitali Klitschko clarified that among the injured was a child who was transported to the hospital by medics, and the number of dead had risen to several. Adult wounded were given aid on site.

According to the mayor, the armed man at that time was inside a supermarket, where shots were also heard. That is why the special operation continued not only on the street but also around the shopping facility.

At the same time some reports that spread massively in local publics and Telegram channels had not yet been officially confirmed at that time. These concern, in particular, information about hostages in the supermarket, preparation of an assault by KORD forces and the introduction of the special operation “Siren” in the district. Such information was already published in a number of media outlets and publics, however in verified official statements by the police and the mayor the editorial office at the time of preparing this text did not find confirmation of these details.

Similarly, various figures regarding the number of victims appeared in the information space, up to four dead. However the official communication at the time of publication looked like this: the police initially spoke of one dead, and the mayor of Kyiv later reported several deceased. Thus the exact number of victims in this story still requires official clarification.

Importantly, there is currently no confirmation of the attacker’s identity. On social networks it was written that he was allegedly an elderly man, but law enforcement did not publicly confirm this. Therefore any details about age, motives or circumstances that have not been announced by the police or city authorities should be treated with caution. This is a story where there are already many rumors, and fewer verified facts than emotions in the news feed.

The Interior Minister reported that the shooter was neutralized. KORD special forces of the National Police stormed the store where the perpetrator was located. He took people hostage and fired at police during the arrest. Negotiators attempted to contact him beforehand. The number of the attacker’s victims is being clarified. There are dead and wounded. The terrorist was born in Moscow. The suspect’s name – Vasylchenkov Dmytro Vasylovych, date of birth – 21.04.1968, – UP. He holds Ukrainian citizenship. He previously lived in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, and later in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv.
