Your gas is fully under control: meter readings will be transmitted automatically without any action from you
Gas without paperwork: Ukrainians are promised automatic transmission of meter readings — no manual submission needed anymore
In Ukraine, a program to modernize gas metering is being launched that will eliminate manual submission of meter readings. Instead, meter data will be transmitted automatically thanks to the installation of special smart modules.
The State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine together with JSC “Decarbonization Fund of Ukraine” have implemented a state financial support program. Using funds from the State Fund for Decarbonization and Energy Efficient Transformation of Ukraine, 40 000 Ukrainian-made smart modules were purchased and transferred to LLC “Gas Distribution Networks of Ukraine” free of charge.
These are special devices that are installed on existing gas meters and expand their functionality. They provide wireless data transmission and integration with digital metering systems, allowing automatic recording of gas consumption volumes without human involvement.
Taking into account regional needs, the equipment was distributed among branches: the Volyn branch will receive 3 380 devices, the Kyiv branch — 23 965, and the Mykolaiv branch — 12 655 smart modules. After receiving the equipment, branches must ensure phased installation in households and public institutions.
Among the stated advantages are automatic transmission of readings without the need for monthly submission, the ability to track consumption via digital services, rapid detection of atypical changes in consumption, and the generation of charges based on actual data, which should reduce the risk of errors.
The agency notes that the implementation of smart modules is a step toward adopting European approaches in the field of energy efficiency and fulfilling Ukraine’s international obligations. In particular, this concerns the need to implement intelligent metering systems that allow consumers to receive accurate data and manage energy consumption more effectively.
The launch of this program was announced by the head of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency, Hanna Zamazieieva, commenting on the modernization of the gas metering system.
“Such a decision is a fast and economically efficient way of scaling up the implementation of modern gas metering. It allows remote transmission of data and integration into digital platforms, providing transparency and convenience for consumers”.
Despite the stated convenience, an important nuance is that these modules were purchased with budget funds. For people this looks like a free upgrade, but the financing is carried out from a state fund, i.e., effectively at the expense of taxpayers.
