The heating was turned off: how Mykolaiv made it through the hardest winter without major failures
In Mykolaiv on March 24, 2026 the heating season was officially completed. According to the city authorities, the 2025 – 2026 heating season was one of the most stable in recent times. The city administration explains this not as a coincidence, but as the result of prior preparations, repairs of heat networks and the work of heat-supply enterprises under extremely difficult wartime conditions.
“I consider this season the best in recent years. And this is the result of the great work of our heat workers and municipal services”, – said Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych.

The modernization trap: nearly a hundred multi-storey buildings in the Korabelnyi district freeze during power outages
The city council notes that preparation for the heating season was systematic. In particular, at Mykolaiv CHP over the last three years nearly 20 km of large-diameter heat networks were renewed and more than 100 units of shut-off valves were replaced. A significant portion of this work was also carried out during 2025.
A substantial volume of preparatory and repair measures was also carried out by OKP “Mykolaivobltеploenergo”. There, before the start of the season, they replaced more than 8 km of networks and also repaired boiler houses and heat distribution points. This, the authorities emphasize, made it possible to get through the winter with a minimal number of emergencies and outages.
A separate challenge for the city were the constant Russian shellings, power supply interruptions and the risks of new blackouts. In these conditions, municipal services had to work practically in continuous response mode, connecting backup power sources and keeping the system operational. To counter the consequences of power outages, “Mykolaivobltеploenergo” used 217 generators and 59 sets of inverters with batteries.
At the same time, the city continued replacing worn pipes with modern pre-insulated ones. Among the most noticeable projects are the networks on 6th Slobidska and Kosmonavtiv streets.
A kind of “economy”: pipes in the Korabelnyi district heat the street air
Despite the end of the season, preparation for next winter has already begun. Currently “Mykolaivobltеploenergo” is carrying out works to lay more than 300 meters of pre-insulated pipes on Kosmonavtiv Street.
A particular priority named by the city authorities is the energy autonomy of heat-generation facilities. At 36 facilities they plan to install solar panels and ESS energy storage systems ESS, so that boiler houses can operate even during prolonged power outages.
