The Rada rejected an 80,000-hryvnia salary cap for officials
They sought to cut expenditures through an amendment to the 2027 budget
Limiting officials’ monthly salaries to 80,000 hryvnias in an effort to cut budget spending failed: the Verkhovna Rada rejected the relevant amendment to the draft state budget for 2027. The vote took place on Wednesday, October 28.
The proposed salary cap would have applied to employees of government bodies, local self-government bodies, and public-sector institutions. In particular, the cap would have covered:
- members of parliament;
- judges;
- prosecutors;
- employees of the National Bank.
An exception was proposed for those involved in defending the country and repelling Russian aggression, who would not be subject to the cap. The Government was to determine the full list of relevant positions.
157 members of parliament supported the amendment, while 226 votes were needed for its adoption. The Budget Committee also opposed the proposal.
In Mykolaiv Oblast, the average salary of full-time employees in July was nearly 28,500 hryvnias. At the same time, earnings in different sectors could vary by more than fourfold.
