11 years in prison for murdering his mother: man pushed her off a balcony in Mykolaiv

The other day, a court sentenced a 42-year-old man to 11 years in prison for the premeditated murder of his mother in Mykolaiv. The crime took place on May 9, 2019. The verdict has not yet entered into force.

That day, in an apartment building on Tsentralnyi Avenue, the man argued with his mother. While intoxicated, after another altercation, he pushed her off the balcony on the seventh floor with both hands. The woman’s injuries proved fatal.

An investigative team from Police Station No. 1 of the Mykolaiv District Police Department arrived at the scene. Police found that conflicts between the son and his mother had occurred repeatedly.

Investigators detained the man in accordance with procedural requirements. The court later ordered him held in custody as a preventive measure.

During the court hearings, the prosecution presented sufficient evidence and proved that the man had intentionally killed his mother. The court found the defendant guilty under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—premeditated murder—and imposed a sentence.

Procedural supervision of the case was carried out by the Mykolaiv City District Prosecutor’s Office.

Under Article 532 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, a judgment of a court of first instance enters into force once the statutory period for filing an appeal has expired, provided no appeal has been filed. If an appeal is filed, the decision, provided it is upheld, enters into force after the appellate court issues its ruling.
