Every municipal bus, tram, and trolleybus in Mykolaiv has an emergency button
Security Police responds to a call within five minutes
In Mykolaiv, all municipal buses, trams, and trolleybuses are equipped with emergency buttons for calling the police. On October 9, Mykolaiv City Council reported on how the safety system works.
If an emergency occurs while a vehicle is in motion, the driver presses the button. Officers from the Security Police respond and help resolve the conflict. According to the city council, the response time is up to 5 minutes.
All teams of inspectors from Mykolaivelectrotrans Municipal Enterprise are also equipped with emergency buttons. They use them when disputes arise over fare evasion.
Law enforcement officers named the most common reasons for calls:
- fare evasion;
- public disturbances caused by intoxicated passengers.
“Safety on public transport is extremely important to us, which is why our municipal enterprises work with the Security Police. We commissioned these particular services. Every trolleybus, tram, and bus in the city, as well as our inspectors, is equipped with a button to call a special response team. I thank the police officers for their work and for helping us feel safe on public transport, and our transport workers for their daily efforts,” said Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych.
As an example of how effective the system is, the city council cited an incident on September 24, when a group of young people used an air pistol during a conflict on a trolleybus.
According to the city council, the driver immediately pressed the emergency button and called the Security Police. Its officers detained one of the attackers. Footage from the surveillance cameras inside the vehicle helped law enforcement officers quickly locate and detain all the other people involved in the incident.
