In the evening of September 24, on trolleybus route No. 2 in Mykolaiv, during a conflict a 17-year-old boy fired at least five shots from an air pistol at a 46-year-old passenger. The man sustained facial injuries but refused medical assistance.

The incident occurred at about 20:35. A citizen reported the shooting on public transport to the police. Patrol officers and staff of Police Station No. 1 of the Mykolaiv District Police Department found the injured passenger on the trolleybus.

Police found that the man addressed a group of young people who were using obscene language. A verbal altercation with shoving began between the passenger and one of the minors. During the conflict, the man produced a knife and pushed the boy away, after which the group got off the trolleybus at a stop.

At the next stop, another boy from the same group entered the cabin. He fired at least five shots at the 46-year-old man, then left the scene.

The participants in the conflict and their whereabouts were identified during investigative and operational-search measures with the involvement of specialists from the Criminal Analysis Department of the regional police headquarters. For this, law enforcement used footage from the “Safe City” camera system and video from public transport.

The participants turned out to be local residents aged 15, 16 and 17 years. According to the police, the shots were fired by the 17-year-old boy. Investigators detained him pursuant to Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

The air pistol, which the police consider the weapon of the crime, was seized and sent for examination. The incident was qualified under Part 4 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — hooliganism with the use of a weapon. The article’s sanction provides for punishment in the form of seven years imprisonment.

Investigators are deciding on notifying the detainee of suspicion and choosing a preventive measure. Separately, they must provide a legal qualification of the actions of the other participants in the conflict. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
