Mykolaiv and its Romanian partner city, Galați, discussed opportunities for further cooperation and the implementation of joint projects. The talks took place online, with Deputy Mayor Serhii Koreniev and representatives of the Romanian partners taking part.

One of the topics was the “blue economy.” Tetiana Shulychenko, Director of the Department of Strategic Development and Investment of the Mykolaiv City Council, explained that both cities are located near major waterways and may therefore be interested in joint initiatives in this area. Mykolaiv already has relevant plans in place.

The following projects were discussed at the meeting:

  • Creating an aquaport — the project involves revitalising the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Plant, with a focus on developing comfortable public spaces.
  • Creating the Mykolaiv Industrial Park — it is intended to support innovation, stimulate industrial growth and expand the city’s technological capabilities.

Serhii Koreniev also introduced the partners to modern-day Mykolaiv, outlining its economic potential, strategic goals and development plans. He named the following as key priorities:

  • preparing the City Master Plan;
  • developing industry and innovation;
  • sustainable development;
  • effective governance.

In addition to economic projects, participants discussed possible cooperation between universities, as well as cultural and sports exchanges. The talks were attended by:

  • from Mykolaiv — Yevhen Trushliakov, Rector of the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding;
  • from Galați — representatives of the municipality;
  • Marian Barbu, Rector of “Dunarea de Jos” University.

Serhii Koreniev stressed the importance of cooperation with European cities for Mykolaiv: it creates additional opportunities for shared development and the delivery of new projects.

One of the earlier steps in developing international ties was the signing of a twinning agreement between Mykolaiv and the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district. Serhii Koreniev signed the agreement in Berlin.
