The case concerning the death of a woman in the Horokhiv community has been referred to court
In the Mykolaiv region, the pre-trial investigation into the fatal collision with a cyclist in the Horokhiv community has been completed. According to the police, a 57-year-old man, at the wheel of an acquaintance’s car, hit a 53-year-old local resident and fled. The woman died at the scene from her injuries. The indictment has already been sent to court.
At around 5:00 a.m. on August 21, the emergency number 102 received a report: on the road between the villages of Horokhivske and Vynohradne a woman was lying with no signs of life, and nearby — a damaged bicycle.
At the scene were:
- investigators from the investigative department of the regional police headquarters;
- forensic laboratory specialists;
- operatives of the criminal investigation department;
- police officers of the local investigative-operational group;
- a forensic medical expert.
During the examination, physical evidence was collected and seized, and the identity of the deceased was established — a 53-year-old resident of the community. The expert concluded that the nature of the injuries on her body indicated a road traffic accident.
Joining the search for the vehicle and the driver were:
- operatives and analysts from the criminal investigation and criminal analysis departments of the regional police headquarters;
- law enforcement officers of the local police department;
- police community officers of Bashtanka district.
Police questioned residents of nearby settlements, looking for possible witnesses, the vehicle, and the driver who left the scene of the accident.
The next day, an officer of the Snihurivka community, while on patrol, noticed a parked VAZ-2106 on a street in the district center. Its bumper had marks characteristic of a road traffic accident.
The police established that that day the car owner had been drinking with his 57-year-old acquaintance, and then went to rest. The acquaintance took advantage of this and took the car for a drive. According to the circumstances established by the investigation, between settlements he ran over the cyclist, left the scene of the accident, and returned the car to the owner’s yard.
Investigators from the department for investigating transport-related crimes of the investigative department of the regional police headquarters conducted a procedural experiment and ordered a number of expert examinations. Procedural guidance was provided by the Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
After receiving the expert conclusions, a 57-year-old man was notified of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This concerns the violation of traffic safety rules or vehicle operation by a person driving a vehicle that caused the death of the victim.
Having completed the pre-trial investigation on the basis of the collected evidence, investigators sent the indictment to the Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office. The prosecutor’s office forwarded it to the court for substantive consideration.
The court will decide on the accused. He faces up to eight years in prison with possible disqualification from driving for up to three years.
According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in accordance with the law and established by a guilty verdict of the court.
