Coffee tucked under a sweater and fleeing without paying: the case of a multimarket robbery in Mykolaiv

In a multimarket in Mykolaiv a man grabbed a pack of coffee and ran out of the store without paying. According to the police, he ignored an employee’s demand to return the item or pay for it.

The store manager reported the incident on 28 September. Police found that the customer took the coffee from the shelf and hid it under his sweater, then headed for the exit. The employee’s remark did not stop him.

With a description of the man, officers within several hours established who he was and where he was. He turned out to be a 40-year-old local resident.

Investigators, under the procedural supervision of the District Prosecutor’s Office of Mykolaiv, notified the man of suspicion under part 4 of article 186 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — robbery committed under martial law. The court imposed a preventive measure on him — house arrest.

The alleged crime carries up to 10 years of imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
