Squares may "swap" names: in Korabelnyi they're looking for a place to name after Vadym Serdtsev

"Vitovskyi" or "Zviazku": they want to rename the square in honor of the person who planted the trees there

Mykolaiv City Council 28 September 2026 announced an online survey on honoring the memory of the Honorary Citizen of the city Vadym Andriyovych Serdtsev, who for many years voluntarily looked after the green plantings of Mykolaiv. Residents are being asked to decide which square in the Korabelnyi District could receive his name.

Relatives of Vadym Serdtsev support the idea of naming one of the district’s squares where he lived after him. The windows of his house faced directly onto the “Vytovskyi” square, where he personally planted trees and constantly cared for them. At the same time, the city faced a toponymic dilemma. The “Vytovskyi” square on Oleh Kravets Street has a historical name important for the local toponymy.

At the same time, nearby there is the “Zviazku” square on Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue. According to the city council, this square has no attachment to historical names or a specific person. Note that the “Zviazku” square has this name because it is located near the main post office of the Korabelnyi District.

Therefore, residents of Mykolaiv were offered three options.

First option — rename the “Vytovskyi” square on Oleh Kravets Street in the Korabelnyi District to the square named after V. A. Serdtsev. The justification is that Vadym Serdtsev lived directly adjacent to it and actively participated in its greening.

Second option — rename the “Zviazku” square on Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue, between buildings № 316-320, to the square named after V. A. Serdtsev.

Third option proposes renaming the “Vytovskyi” square to the square named after V. A. Serdtsev, and changing the name of the “Zviazku” square to “Vytovskyi”. Thus, the historical name would be preserved in the local toponymy but transferred to another square.

After the public consultations conclude, all received proposals and the survey results will be submitted for consideration to the commission on the naming (renaming) of streets, lanes, avenues, squares, parks, and other structures within Mykolaiv.
