The US has signaled new negotiations between Ukraine and Russia: a meeting could be announced soon
Zelensky insists on handling territorial issues at the presidential level
September 6, 2026 the US president’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said that Washington seeks to restore a trilateral negotiation format involving Ukraine, the United States and Russia. The parties may announce a possible meeting in the near future.
At a press conference, Witkoff said that together with the US president’s special envoy Jared Kushner he heard in Moscow “new ideas that had not worked before.” These proposals were later discussed by the American representatives with the Ukrainian side during a meeting in Kyiv.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said that work is needed to hold trilateral negotiations. He also allowed for a format with European partners, but noted that the final decision will depend on Russia‘s willingness.
Yes, we must do everything to make sure trilateral meetings take place. Or trilateral meetings plus European partners. Well, we’ll see what Russia agrees to. Today it still, unfortunately, has enough confidence to think about one format or another
According to Zelensky, territorial issues should be discussed at the level of presidents. The talks with representatives of the United States were about not only ending hostilities but also the future reconstruction of the state.
We are all talking about the future of Ukraine. We are all in solidarity here; we all want to end the war as soon as possible. We are discussing not only security guarantees but also economic ones for Ukraine — to recover, to rebuild. We understand all the challenges that will exist after the end of the war, and we discuss them among ourselves. All of this requires resources. Therefore we all understand that guarantees must be strong and clear, that the war will not return
At the same time, Axios, citing its own sources, wrote that Witkoff and Kushner hope to achieve a “turning point” in the war by this winter. Volodymyr Zelensky said that for now the situation “so far looks” like the war will continue into the winter.
On September 6 the special envoys of US President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, arrived in Kyiv. This is their first visit to Ukraine as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
