5 September left in the history of Mykolaiv the first ship of the local shipyard, the fate of a well-known educator, a worrying story with pupils of the Korabelnyi District, an electoral “cut”, a Russian missile strike and the victory of Mykolaiv’s para-fencers.
5 September 1790: the first ship was launched in Mykolaiv
25 August 1790 by the Julian calendar, or 5 September 1790 by the modern Gregorian calendar, the 44-gun frigate “St. Nicholas” was launched at the Mykolaiv Admiralty shipyard — the first ship built in Mykolaiv. As earlier reported by “Корабелів.Інфо”, the vessel was built under the direction of shipwright master Oleksandr Petrovych Sokolov.
5 September 1891: educator Adrian Toporov was born
In the village of Stoilo in the Kursk Governorate, the writer, teacher and educator Adrian Mitrofanovych Toporov was born. He lived in Mykolaiv for 35 years, wrote several books, continued his pedagogical and public work, and in 2000 the townspeople named him one of the 10 most notable Mykolaiv residents of the 20th century.
5 September 2019: a worrying incident began with pupils of School No. 48
In the evening a pupil of School No.48 in the Korabelnyi District was admitted to the infectious diseases hospital with signs of an acute intestinal illness. Later “Корабелів.Інфо” reported that as of 13 September at least 11 younger pupils had been treated in the infectious diseases ward; parents spoke of a much larger number of children with symptoms, but the official cause of the outbreak was not publicly announced.
5 September 2020: Korabelnyi District was left with one electoral constituency
The Mykolaiv City Election Commission divided the city’s 207 polling stations into 7 territorial constituencies: the Central, Zavodskyi and Inhulskyi districts received 2 constituencies each, while the Korabelnyi District received one. At that time the district had 64,279 voters.
5 September 2022: Russians struck an enterprise with S-300 missiles
Around 00:30 Russian forces attacked Mykolaiv with S-300 missiles. Impacts were recorded on the territory of an industrial enterprise on the outskirts of the city; according to preliminary information, there were no fatalities or injuries.
5 September 2025: Mykolaiv para-fencers became world champions
The Ukrainian men’s team won “gold” in the team épée at the World Championship in the city of Iksan in the Republic of Korea. The championship quartet included representatives of the Mykolaiv region: Oleg Serhiyovych Naumenko and Oleksiy Mykolayovych Zakusylov, as well as Artem Ihorovych Manko and Eduard Ivanovych Kudenko.

5 September 1977: Voyager 1 was launched
NASA launched the spacecraft “Voyager 1” to study Jupiter and Saturn. In 2012 it crossed the heliosphere boundary and became the first human-made object in interstellar space.
5 September 2014: the first Minsk Protocol on a ceasefire was signed
Representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the OSCE signed the Minsk Protocol, which envisaged a ceasefire and political settlement of the war in Donbas. The agreements did not stop Russian aggression, and fighting soon resumed.
That was 5 September: from the first ship at the Mykolaiv shipyard to the global “gold” of fellow citizens, and in between — events that remind of both the problems of the Korabelnyi District and the years of the Russian war.
