An Odesa resident called tourists from Mykolaiv "losers": outrage erupted online
In the comments, residents of Odesa began to apologize
Journalists of the publication Dumskaya.net conducted a survey among residents of Odesa, asking their opinions about tourists. One man’s response provoked an outcry on social media.
An Odesa resident said that tourists from the frontline Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Kherson supposedly come only to take pictures near local sights and then brag about it at home.
Answering a journalist’s question about tourists, the man called the city’s visitors “suckers,” but at the end said that trips to Odesa supposedly help them “aspire to culture.”
“Tourists don’t annoy me. What pleases me about tourists is that they show that they are suckers. From the city of Mykolaiv in Mykolaiv Oblast, from Kharkiv. The main task for these suckers is simple: to take a photo in Odesa by a monument whose name they don’t care about, and then in their ‘derevnya’ show that they were in Odesa. That’s the main trait. But it’s not so bad: they show the beauty of the city of Odesa to their comrades from the ‘PGT’ of Mykolaiv Oblast, Kherson Oblast, Kharkiv Oblast. It educates them, they reach for culture, so you can also say a ‘peculiar thank you’ to them.”
After the video was published, an active discussion unfolded in the comments. Many residents of Odesa apologized to the tourists and urged not to take this man’s words as the position of the whole city.
Residents of Mykolaiv, Kherson and Kharkiv Oblasts were outraged by the derogatory remarks. In the comments they reminded that these regions have been suffering daily shelling since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion and have become a shield for other territories of southern and eastern Ukraine.
Social media users also emphasized that tourists come to Odesa primarily for nature, namely the sea, spend money there, support local businesses and deserve respect regardless of their place of residence.
