In the Odesa region on the evening of June 25, a woman was detained in a private house in a rural area of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district on suspicion of torturing her 5-year-old son; the child with severe injuries was taken to hospital.
According to preliminary police data, the boy returned home in tears after a fall, and the mother, who was intoxicated, did not calm him but decided to “discipline” him by force, inflicting several blows with her hands and a wooden axe handle.
The child’s screams were heard by neighbors, who called the police and an ambulance. The boy was hospitalized; doctors recorded a closed traumatic brain injury, a concussion, as well as multiple hematomas and abrasions. He is now under medical supervision; there is no threat to his life.
The family is registered with social services as being in difficult life circumstances. The family also has three other young children, who are currently with their father.
Law enforcement detained the suspect and charged her with torture under Part 1 of Article 127 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court ordered pretrial detention.
Separately, investigators opened proceedings into possible official negligence by employees of the Service for Children’s Affairs.
