Children left alone in the apartment: in Kharkiv, a four-year-old boy died after falling from a window
A 29-year-old mother was detained and notified of suspicion
A fatal tragedy involving a young child occurred in Kharkiv: a four-year-old boy fell from the window of the fourth floor of an apartment building in the Novobavarskyi district. His 29-year-old mother was detained and notified of suspicion.
According to investigators, the incident occurred on May 7, 2026 at approximately 13:20. In the apartment on Novobavarskyi Avenue the boy was left without adult supervision together with his two-year-old sister.
The Office of the Prosecutor General reported the preliminary circumstances of the child’s death.
“Preliminarily, the child climbed onto the windowsill, lost his balance and fell from the fourth-floor window. From the injuries sustained, the boy died in the ambulance,” the Office of the Prosecutor General said.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, the apartment was locked. After entering, police found a small girl inside. She showed signs of dehydration, so medical assistance was provided to the child.
Investigators opened criminal proceedings under Art. 166 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and Part 3 of Art. 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Information was also entered into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations under Art. 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine with the note “accident”.
The Kharkiv region police clarified that the suspect is a single mother who raised and supported the children on her own.
Separately, law enforcement is checking whether certain officials may have improperly performed their duties. The investigation is currently establishing all the circumstances of the tragedy.
