Left people under fire: police in Kyiv are under investigation after fleeing during a terrorist attack

A video of the events of April 18 2026 in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv is being widely shared online, where during the shooting two law enforcement officers reportedly left the scene without providing protection to civilians. According to eyewitnesses, among those who found themselves under threat was a child.

It is known that one of the civilian men was killed as a result of the attack. Information about other victims is being clarified.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reacted to the situation, announcing the start of an official review of the police officers’ actions. At his instruction, the head of the National Police of Ukraine, Ivan Vygivskyi, is to conduct an investigation and forward all materials to the State Bureau of Investigation.

“I instructed the Head of the National Police of Ukraine, Ivan Vygivskyi, to carry out an official investigation into the actions of the police during the terrorist attack in Kyiv and to provide all information to the DBR. ‘To serve and protect’ is not just a slogan. It must be backed up by appropriate professional actions. Especially in critical moments when people’s lives depend on it. The results and decisions of the official investigation will be published by the National Police in the shortest possible time,” Klymenko said.

Thus, the situation surrounding the actions of law enforcement during the emergency incident has reached the level of an official investigation. Its results should answer the main question — whether the police acted in accordance with their duties at the moment when people’s lives depended on their decisions. As reported by Interior Minister Ivan Vygivskyi, the police officers who left people during yesterday’s shooting in Kyiv have been suspended from performing their duties pending the official investigation.
