Parents disappeared or were killed: dozens of children were left alone because of the war
In the Mykolaiv Oblast, 98 children have already received a special status due to the loss of their parents as a result of the war. This concerns cases where one or both parents were killed, died of wounds, or went missing under special circumstances during hostilities. This was reported by the head of the Children’s Affairs Service of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Iryna Ponomaryova during a briefing on 15 April 2026.
In addition, another 46 children received victim status due to injuries, concussions, or maiming. A further four children suffered physical violence during the occupation. The official spoke about the situation of children who were deported or illegally taken out of Ukraine and later returned. She clarified that since 2022, 45 children have returned to the oblast, having arrived for further residence after deportation.
“To date, 45 children have arrived in the territory of Mykolaiv Oblast to continue living after deportation since 2022. In 2025, 30 children arrived, and this year already 3 children have also arrived in Mykolaiv Oblast. Among them was one child with a disability, and also 3 children, after returning, were granted in the oblast the status of a child deprived of parental guardianship. There are also categories added last year. For example, children were kidnapped or illegally taken out of Ukraine. In 2025, 5 children received such a status who were returned in 2024. Also in 2025, due to the occupation and the forced removal of children from an institution, 8 children were returned, and already some persons have reached adulthood and were returned to the territory of Mykolaiv Oblast,” — said Iryna Ponomaryova.
It is also noted that among the returned children there are those who, after returning, received the status of children deprived of parental care.
