Kyiv prepares for possible metro disruptions: free ground transport is being planned
The government must present a program and ensure a reserve of buses
A free-fare program for Kyiv’s municipal surface transport is to be developed. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi to do so, as he reported on his Telegram channel following a conference call.
The plan is to prepare surface transport for possible disruptions to metro services or problems with bridges across the Dnipro. According to the president, possible backup transport routes for the capital were presented at the meeting by:
- Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi;
- Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Ihor Klymenko;
- Minister of Internal Affairs Ivan Vyhovskyi.
The authorities are also working on providing the city with a sufficient number of vehicles and changing traffic arrangements in certain districts of Kyiv.
“It is important for the government to prepare specific measures to ensure that municipal surface transport operates reliably and is guaranteed to remain accessible if metro services are disrupted or problems arise with bridges across the Dnipro. I instructed the prime minister to present a program for free travel on municipal surface transport and ensure an adequate reserve of buses for Kyiv. Thank you for the specific proposals,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
