Threats over a “debt”: Odesa auto mechanic was demanded to pay $25,000
The suspects were detained while attempting to drive away in the victim’s car
In Odesa, an auto mechanic became the victim of an extortion plot involving $25,000 and the illegal taking of his car. The circumstances of the incident, which took place in October, were reported by the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
According to investigators, preparations began in September: a 41-year-old native of the Bolhrad district recruited a 30-year-old Odesa resident to join his plan. Through mutual acquaintances, they learned about a 43-year-old mechanic who repairs cars and motor vehicles, and chose him as their victim.
The following month, the men went to a gas station on Balkivska Street, where the mechanic was. There, investigators say, they demanded money from him, claiming he owed them for repairs. When he refused to pay, they threatened him with physical violence.
The prosecutor’s office also reported that one of the suspects hit the victim on the head, knocking him to the ground. After finding out that the mechanic did not have the required amount, the men threatened to take and sell his Chevrolet Bolt. Under pressure and threats, the owner was forced to hand over the car keys and registration certificate.
The men then got into the victim’s car and tried to drive away from the gas station. Law enforcement officers arrested them as they made their attempt.
Both detainees were charged with extortion and the illegal taking of a vehicle using the threat of violence. At the prosecutor’s request, the main suspect was remanded in custody without the possibility of bail. The preventive measure imposed on his accomplice allows for bail. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
