Trump believes Ukraine and Russia are ready for a deal to end the war
Ukrainian negotiators are more cautious in assessing the prospects for reaching agreements
President US President Donald Trump spoke positively about the progress of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia and suggested that the sides were nearing an agreement that would allow the war to end. He shared his view in an interview with Financial Times.
“I think both sides are ready to say, ‘Let’s make a deal,’” said US President Donald Trump.
At the same time, Ukrainian negotiators are more cautious in their assessment of the prospects for an agreement between Kyiv and Moscow, Financial Times notes. Thus, the optimistic statement reflects the US president’s own assessment, while the Ukrainian side’s position suggests that it is still too early to speak of a completed deal.
During the conversation, Trump also compared Russia’s war against Ukraine with other conflicts. He explained that he does not believe the United States is at war with Iran in the same way it would be in a conflict with Russia, or as it was during World War I and World War II.
