Three post-war security guarantee options: Ukraine is considering NATO, the United States, and a coalition of the willing
A strong and adequately funded army must become the foundation of security
Ukraine is considering three options for security guarantees after the war ends. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy explained during a meeting with the prime minister of Finland that these would form a package of guarantees based on a strong Ukrainian army.
The president named the following as possible components of this package:
- NATO — an option everyone is counting on, according to the president.
- Direct guarantees from the United States, which are currently being discussed with the American side.
- A Coalition of the Willing, which would include security guarantees for Europe from the United States.
Speaking about direct American guarantees, the president also used the following wording:
“There is a Fifth Amendment there,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Both the size and the quality of the Defense Forces are important for providing these guarantees. According to the president, this will require substantial funding.
“Our colleagues in Europe and America know about this. We have already worked everything out, including the funding and the required number of our troops, so that our country can feel secure,” Zelenskyy added.
The president also explained his view on Ukraine’s accession to NATO and why it matters not only for Ukraine’s security:
“We believe this is important. With our army, we are important to NATO. Just as NATO is very important for the security of Ukraine. We are not discussing this in detail yet, but we are talking it over with our partners. To be honest, I believe that even the Russians need this — our accession to NATO. Because it would mean greater security for them than having Ukraine outside NATO,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed.
Talks between Russia, the United States and Ukraine may take place in Abu Dhabi in November.
