In Ukraine, it has been proposed that Bible Day be observed every year on October 31. The relevant draft resolution of the Verkhovna Rada No. 16166 has already been registered, but the new commemorative date has not yet received official status. According to itd.rada.gov.ua.

The date was chosen in connection with the history of the Ukrainian translation of the Holy Scriptures: on October 31, 1903, the complete translation of the Bible into modern Ukrainian literary language was published. It was produced by:

  • Panteleimon Kulish;
  • Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky;
  • Ivan Pului.

According to the authors of the draft, an annual observance would help promote the Ukrainian language, preserve historical and cultural heritage, and draw attention to the history of publishing. They also expect the commemorative date to boost young people’s interest in the history of religion and literature.

The initiative does not provide for an additional day off: businesses and institutions would be able to operate as usual. At the same time, educational institutions, libraries, and museums could choose to organize themed events.

For now, this is only a legislative proposal. For the commemorative date to be officially established, the draft resolution must be approved by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The document is available on the parliamentary portal: https://itd.rada.gov.ua/billinfo/Bills/Card/70966.
