6th Slobidska Street in Mykolaiv is being prepared for two-way traffic
The rails have already been replaced, and the contractor is covering the costs
In Mykolaiv, major road repairs are underway on 6th Slobidska Street, between Tsentralnyi Avenue and People’s Garden. Work is now nearing completion on laying tiles in the roadway and sidewalk areas. The next stage will be asphalt paving. Once all the work is complete, the road will reopen to two-way traffic instead of one-way traffic.
Before resurfacing began, work was carried out on the utility networks and tram infrastructure at the site. The project participants divided the work as follows:
- Mykolaiv CHP PJSC first upgraded its underground utility networks;
- Mykolaivelectrotrans Municipal Enterprise replaced the rail-and-sleeper track system and its supports;
- the Department of Municipal Affairs began landscaping the area.
“This is a very large-scale project, as it involves a whole range of work carried out with the participation of all the city services. We are now at the final stage — landscaping the area. Our specialists have already completely replaced the rail-and-sleeper track system and the supports within the roadway. We are also replacing emergency supports so that the site is fully ready and we won’t have to return here for repairs in the coming years,” explained Mykolaivelectrotrans Director Yurii Smetana.
To switch the repaired section to two-way traffic, all road signs will be replaced and new road markings applied. These changes are to be introduced once all the work is complete.
“Of the issues we face, the biggest is, of course, funding — as it is across Ukraine. For now, we are working exclusively with the company’s own funds. We hope the city will reach an understanding with the central authorities on funding for the project, since this is essentially the only major road repair currently underway in the city,” said Yevhen Prudnyk, chief engineer at the contractor Mykolaivmahistral.
Pedestrian areas remain a separate issue: their reconstruction is not included in the current project. City authorities attribute the postponement of this work to the budget’s limited resources.
“It should be emphasized that the work is being done to a high standard, and we hold regular meetings here. The budget is small, and the capital expenditure budget is practically negligible, so it’s fair to say that this year this is the only road undergoing major repairs. Local residents regularly come up to me and ask whether the pedestrian areas will be reconstructed. We tell them that this is not included in the project for now, but we will definitely return to it in the future, because it really is in terrible condition,” said Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych.
The mayor also drew attention to drivers who ignore prohibition signs and enter the construction site. According to him, their cars damage the new surface, forcing workers to redo completed work and spend extra time and money. The city head urged drivers to respect the construction workers’ efforts and help protect community funds.
