Over a million in an accordion bag: Kyiv woman gets back bag forgotten on a bus
To retrieve the valuables, police had to partially dismantle the bus mechanism
In Kyiv’s Desnianskyi District, a 70-year-old passenger got back a bag she had accidentally left on a bus. Finding it inside the vehicle was no easy task: the bag had slipped into the protective cover beneath the articulated bus’s pivot mechanism.
The pensioner noticed the bag was missing only some time after getting off. She immediately contacted law enforcement for help. The woman said she was carrying all her valuables:
- savings in various currencies worth a total of over UAH 1 million;
- gold jewelry;
- real estate documents.
Officers from the Desnianskyi Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit found out which bus the woman had taken and began searching for her belongings inside with the driver. During the inspection, they discovered that the bag had fallen beneath the pivot mechanism and into its protective corrugated cover—a section of the bus commonly called the “accordion.” This had happened while the bus was moving.
To reach the bag, police partially dismantled the mechanism’s metal components. They were then able to retrieve it. The money, valuables, and documents were all there—nothing was missing.
The owner spent several anxious hours waiting for news before her bag was returned. Overjoyed to have her belongings back, she thanked the officers for their prompt help and attentive care.
