Valentyn Smyntyna, former rector of Odesa University, has died
The scientist headed the higher education institution from 1995 to 2010
Yesterday, Ukrainian scientist Valentyn Andriiovych Smyntyna, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, professor, and former rector of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, passed away. He was 78 years old.
He led the university from 1995 to 2010. During his tenure, he made a significant contribution to the development of the university and higher education in Ukraine.
Valentyn Smyntyna’s research covered the physics and technology of semiconductors, sensor electronics, and technologies. He devoted much of his life to the advancement of science and education. His many years of scientific and administrative work, as well as his dedication to the university, left a notable mark on the history of Ukrainian science and the academic community.
The scientist was born on September 8, 1948, in the village of Vyshneve, now part of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi District, Odesa Oblast.
Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University expressed its condolences to the family, loved ones, colleagues, and everyone who knew and worked with Valentyn Smyntyna.
