A drunk locksmith stole a tram in Kyiv: it was stopped by cutting the power
A depot worker was detained; he faces up to five years in prison
In Kyiv a 20-year-old tram depot mechanic, while intoxicated, took a reserve tram without authorization and drove it onto one of the city routes. To stop the trip, workers had to shut off power to the overhead contact network. Traffic accident did not occur.
In the evening the worker waited until there was no one nearby, entered the cab, started the car and drove toward the “Boryspilska” metro station. The depot dispatcher notified the police about the tram’s disappearance from the enterprise’s territory.
A forensic-operational team from the Dnipro Police Department and other law enforcement officers arrived at the depot. They established the mechanic’s involvement in the unlawful seizure of the tram. When the tram stopped after the network was de-energized, the man was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
During a sobriety check the detainee was found to have 1.41 per mille of alcohol. Explaining his actions, he said that he really loves riding trams.
Investigators informed the man of suspicion of unlawful seizure of a vehicle under Part 1 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Under this article he faces up to five years in prison.
