From Kupyansk to Zaporizhzhia: Ukraine’s Armed Forces advanced on several fronts at once — ISW

Ukrainian forces in recent days have advanced on the Kupiansk, Novopavlivka and Oleksandrivka directions, as well as in the area of Chasiv Yar. Near Orikhiv they held positions or made gains in the southern part of the town. Changes on the front are reported in the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) report for 23 September.

Russian forces meanwhile continued offensive operations across several sectors. However, analysts did not identify any confirmed advances by Russian units on several directions.

Sumy direction

In the north of the Sumy region, Russian forces attacked on 22 and 23 September, but did not achieve confirmed successes. According to the ISW, they are actively employing small-group infiltration while suffering significant losses.

At the same time, Russian aviation struck Sumy with guided bombs.

Advance near Kupiansk

In the north of the Kharkiv region, Russian forces continued their offensive, however analysts did not record any confirmed changes in their favor. In some areas the positions of Ukrainian and Russian units are so intermingled that it is difficult to identify a clear front line.

Ukrainian forces advanced west of Kalynove, located north of Kupiansk. Geolocation materials also indicate the presence of Ukrainian troops near Kalynove and north of Kondrashivka. Analysts say this allows for improved positions on the flanks of Kupiansk.

Chasiv Yar and Novopavlivka

In the Donetsk region Ukrainian units advanced in the eastern and central parts of Molocharka. The settlement is located southwest of Chasiv Yar and north of Kostiantynivka.

Geolocation data also indicate advances by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) east of Stinka, which lies northeast of Kostiantynivka. On the southern sector of the front, Ukrainian forces improved positions to the south and southeast of Novopavlivka.

Russian units are holding positions in certain areas and are attempting to maintain the defensive line.

Oleksandrivka and Orikhiv

In the area of Oleksandrivka, Ukrainian forces advanced southeast of the settlement. Ukrainian military analyst Kostiantyn Mashovets reported that the AFU liberated Shevchenko, moved toward Burlatske and reached the northern part of Pavlivka.

In the area of Orikhiv, Ukrainian troops held positions or made advances in the southern part of the town. Russian forces attempted to penetrate northeast of Orikhiv.

Ukrainian units also continue to disrupt Russian logistics in the occupied territory of the Zaporizhzhia region. According to the ISW, Ukrainian drones attacked Russian trucks on the M-14 highway between Mariupol and Berdyansk.

Russian forces continued attacks in the north of the Kharkiv region, near Huliaipole, and on other sectors of the front.
