A bag, a chase and a knife: a drunken quarrel near a shop in Korabelnyi ended in murder

Near a shop on Raiduzhna Street in Mykolaiv, a verbal conflict between two local residents ended in a fatal stabbing. A 55-year-old man died, and the 51-year-old suspect was detained and informed of suspicion of intentional homicide.

On September 19 witnesses reported a fight on Raiduzhna Street and the death of one of the men to operators of the emergency line 102. Responding to the call were:

• the investigative-operational group of Police Department No. 3 of the Mykolaiv District Police Directorate;
• operatives from the precinct and the Main Directorate of the National Police in Mykolaiv Oblast;
• specialists of the forensic laboratory of the investigative department.

According to the police, the 51-year-old man was intoxicated. He was buying alcohol in the shop, and after coming out onto the street a verbal argument arose between him and the 55-year-old man. During the conflict the suspect first hit his opponent with a bag of goods.

The victim began to run, but tripped and fell. After that the suspect inflicted about 18 stab wounds to his body. During the examination of the deceased the forensic medical expert counted about 18 cut wounds.

With the support of analysts from the Criminal Analysis Department of the regional police headquarters, law enforcement identified the participants in the deadly conflict. The police note that the 51-year-old man had previously come to the attention of law enforcement.

After the crime the suspect fled home, where officers established his whereabouts. The knife with which, according to the investigation, he inflicted the blows remained near the body of the deceased. Forensic experts seized the item as evidence, and investigators will send it for examination.

Under the procedural guidance of the District Prosecutor’s Office of the city of Mykolaiv, the man was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He was notified of suspicion of intentional murder under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The article’s sanction provides for up to 15 years of imprisonment. A court is expected to decide on a preventive measure for the suspect shortly. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
