Marriage to her daughter for $3,000: in the Mykolaiv region a mother promised passage abroad

In Pervomaisk, a pre-trial investigation was completed regarding a 55-year-old resident of the district center and her 37-year-old daughter. According to the investigation, for 3,000 US dollars they organized a fictitious marriage that was intended to give a man liable for military service legal grounds to accompany a wife with a disability while crossing the state border. The indictment has already been sent to court.

The scheme was uncovered in June of this year by investigators and operatives of the Pervomaisk District Police Department. Operational support was provided by officers of the Migration Police Directorate, and specialists from the Criminal Analysis Department of the Regional Police Directorate were also involved. Procedural guidance was provided by the Pervomaisk District Prosecutor’s Office.

During the investigation, police established that the older of the women found a man liable for military service among her acquaintances. She offered him, for a fee, to register a fictitious marriage with her daughter, who has a Group III disability.

According to the investigation, the instigator assured the man that after the marriage he would be able, on legal grounds, to accompany a wife with a disability when crossing the state border. The women priced their services at 3,000 US dollars. They received the money after the official registration of the marriage and the issuance of the marriage certificate.

Immediately after receiving the payment, law enforcement detained the mother and daughter during procedural actions. With the prosecutor’s consent, both were informed of suspicion of organizing the illegal transfer of people across the state border of Ukraine for profit — under Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The court imposed a preventive measure of nighttime house arrest on both suspects. After the pre-trial investigation was completed, investigators sent the indictment to the Pervomaisk District Prosecutor’s Office, from where it was forwarded to the court for consideration on the merits.

If found guilty, the women face up to 9 years of imprisonment, a ban on holding certain positions or engaging in specified activities for up to 3 years, and confiscation of property.

In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until their guilt has been proven in the manner prescribed by law and confirmed by a guilty verdict of a court.
