Drones have reached Novy Urengoy: a strategic plant has been struck
There are reports of an attack on a strategic plant more than 2,800 km from Ukraine
Ukrainian drones, according to media and monitoring resources, 9 вересня 2026 року reached the area of Нового Уренгоя in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug of the Russian Federation for the first time. The Novo-Urengoy condensate preparation plant – the large enterprise “Газпром переработка”, which works with hydrocarbon feedstock of the Russian gas industry – was hit. Footage published online reports a fire at the industrial site.
That same day the authorities of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug officially declared a drone hazard. Residents of the region were urged to remain indoors and to stay away from windows. This came against the backdrop of similar warnings in neighboring Russian regions.
According to available reports, the target may have been the condensate preparation plant located approximately 23 км from Нового Уренгоя. It is this facility that “Газпром переработка” calls the largest enterprise for processing hydrocarbon feedstock under Far North conditions. The industrial site covers about 300 гектарів.
The enterprise receives and processes unstable gas condensate from the large fields of the Nadym–Pur–Taz region. The plant produces de-ethanized and stabilized gas condensate, diesel fuel, liquefied hydrocarbon gases, light distillate of gas condensate and even jet engine fuel of the TS-1 grade. In total the enterprise produces about 40 видів of commercial products.
According to open industry data, the total design capacity of the Novo-Urengoy ZPKT after expansion is estimated at approximately 19,5 млн тонн сировини на рік. The enterprise is part of a single technological chain with the Surgut condensate stabilization plant.
By straight line from territory controlled by Ukraine to the area of Нового Уренгоя is over 2800 км. The actual trajectory of a drone is usually longer than the straight distance, so assessments of a route of more than 3000 км have already appeared in the Ukrainian information space.
If it is officially confirmed that the drones launched from Ukrainian territory and independently covered such a distance, the attack could become one of the longest Ukrainian strikes on targets on Russian territory.
At the same time, claims specifically about 3300 км and about a new absolute record should be treated cautiously for now. As of publication, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine have not separately confirmed the strike on Новому Уренгою. Official Armed Forces statements for 9 вересня refer to other struck Russian military targets.
Similarly, the manufacturer’s current page for the Fire Point FP-1 Deep Strike drone lists an operational range up to 2600 км. At the same time, already this summer media, citing Fire Point, reported upgraded FP-1 versions capable of covering about 3300-3400 км depending on configuration and route. Such assessments appeared after the July attack on the Омський refinery.
Fire Point itself officially calls the FP-1 a Deep Strike attack drone. On a separate page the company directly states that its long-range systems are used to strike Russian oil refining and fuel infrastructure, military logistics, defense industry enterprises, warehouses, airfields and other facilities that support Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Already in July 2026 Ukrainian drones reached the Омський refinery for the first time – the largest oil refining enterprise in Russia. The straight-line distance to it was estimated at about 2400 км, and taking into account the complex flight route it could have been significantly greater.
If the current attack on Новий Уренгой is confirmed by the Ukrainian side, the geography of strikes will extend further to the northeast – directly to one of the key centers of the Russian gas industry.
It is also worth recalling that the Novo-Urengoy ZPKT has already experienced a serious accident. In August 2021 a fire damaged the condensate de-ethanization unit, after which “Gazprom” was forced to reduce throughput volumes and temporarily stop part of the production capacity. Later a new unit with a capacity of 8 млн тонн на рік was built at the enterprise.
How severely the enterprise was affected by the attack on 9 вересня 2026 року is not yet reliably known. There is no official assessment of the damage from “Газпром переработка” at the time of preparing this material.
