8 September in the history of Mykolaiv combined entrepreneurship and shipbuilding, sport in the Korabelnyi District, contemporary art, the fight for Ukrainian prisoners and war. On this day the founder of “NIBULON” Oleksiy Vadatursky was born, the plant named after the 61 Communard received a new name, and engines roared at the local karting track for the Ukrainian championship.

8 September 1947: the founder of “NIBULON” Oleksiy Opanasovych Vadatursky was born

In the village of Bendzary in Odesa region Oleksiy Opanasovych Vadatursky was born – the future founder and CEO of the company “NIBULON”, whose life and activities were closely linked to Mykolaiv. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine confirms that from 1991 he headed the company he created, and in 2007 he was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine. On 31 July 2022 Oleksiy Vadatursky and his wife Raisa were killed in their home in Mykolaiv as a result of a Russian missile strike.

8 September 2013: a stage of the Ukrainian supermoto championship was held in Korabelnyi

At the karting track in the Korabelnyi District of Mykolaiv the IV stage of the Ukrainian supermoto championship took place. About 30 riders from various cities participated, and the karting track area was transformed into a real sports town for the duration of the tournament. 8 September 2017: the plant named after the 61 Communard became the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Plant

By order dated 8 September 2017 the state enterprise “Shipbuilding Plant named after the 61 Communard” was renamed to the State Enterprise “Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Plant”. This date is recorded in the calendar of memorable dates of the Mykolaiv region. The enterprise is the successor of one of Mykolaiv’s oldest centers of military shipbuilding.

8 September 2023: Mykolaiv ART Week started in Mykolaiv

In Mykolaiv the contemporary art festival Mykolaiv ART Week: MEMORY opened. An online exhibition received submissions from 260 participants from 5 continents, and works by 70 authors were selected for the exposition. Korabelov.info reported that the program included a virtual exhibition, music, cinema, lectures, workshops and other art events.

8 September 2024: Mykolaiv residents reminded about prisoners of war

In central Mykolaiv residents once again held a rally in support of Ukrainian prisoners of war and missing persons. Participants held posters reading “You fought for me – I fight for you”, “They are waiting” and demanded that the issue of captivity not be allowed to disappear from the information space. 8 September 2025: “Shahed” debris damaged a Mykolaiv enterprise

On the night of 8 September 2025 in the Mykolaiv region one strike UAV of the Shahed-131/136 type was shot down or suppressed. As a result of combat activity and falling debris in Mykolaiv premises and equipment of a manufacturing enterprise were damaged, a fire broke out which rescuers extinguished. No people were injured, Korabelov.info reported citing official services.

8 September 1989 in Kyiv the founding congress of the “People’s Movement of Ukraine for Perestroika” opened, which lasted until 10 September. The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance calls the Movement one of the largest organizations that became a powerful driving force in the restoration of Ukraine’s independence. Also, 8 September is observed worldwide as International Literacy Day, which, as UNESCO notes, has been celebrated annually since 1967.

That was 8 September for Mykolaiv: from the person who created one of the city’s most famous businesses and another page in shipbuilding history to the roar of engines in the Korabelnyi District, art, the fight for prisoners and Russian drones over the city.
