Baits containing rabies vaccine will be distributed in the Mykolaiv region
Briquettes will be left near forests, roads, and rivers
In September–October, an autumn campaign of oral vaccination of wild carnivores against rabies is planned to be carried out in the Mykolaiv region. This was reported by the Main Department of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Mykolaiv Oblast.
The vaccine will be distributed by ground in the hunting grounds of the following districts:
- Bashtanskyi;
- Voznesenskyi;
- Mykolaivskyi;
- Pervomaiskyi.
Baits will be placed at forest edges, road shoulders, near rivers and agricultural lands. In forest stands they will also be positioned at road intersections and in logging areas.
Freshly ploughed fields and areas where fieldwork is underway will be treated less intensively. In such locations, baits are allowed to be placed around the perimeter.
One bait looks like a small briquette approximately 3 by 5 centimetres in size with the scent of meat-and-bone meal. Inside is a capsule containing a rabies vaccine.
Residents of the region are urged not to touch any baits they find with their hands, not to move them to another location and not to destroy them.
The State Service explains that the campaign is intended to help build lasting immunity in wild animals. They are the primary carriers of the rabies pathogen, so vaccination should improve the epizootic situation in the region.
Rabies is an especially dangerous viral disease that affects animals and humans. Once clinical signs appear, it almost always ends in death.
