During one of the recent Russian attacks on Mykolaiv, S8000 “Banderol” cruise missiles were able to approach the city at an extremely low altitude. Detection systems did not recognize the aerial targets in time, so the air-raid warning sounded only after at least three explosions. This, 7 September 2026, was reported by the mayor Oleksandr Senkevych during a staff meeting.

The systems allegedly could not “intercept” the missiles, however in Oleksandr Senkevych’s exact statement the wording is different – the detection systems could not actually recognize them. In other words, the mayor was speaking about a problem of timely threat detection, not about a failed interception of already detected targets. Also, according to Oleksandr Senkevych, Russian strike means can be launched from different directions, including from the area of the Kinburn Spit. During the mentioned attack they flew along the river at an extremely low altitude. This is how the mayor explained why the systems could not recognize the threat in time.

“They were flying along the river at a height of no more than 2 meters. The detection systems could not recognize them,” – remarkedOleksandr Senkevych.

The mayor recalled this attack while discussing the security situation in Mykolaiv and the decision not to hold large mass events until City Day. He cited the case with the “Banderols” as an example of how little time people sometimes may have between the appearance of an aerial threat and a strike.

Earlier, according to the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on the evening of 28 August 2026 the Russian army attacked Mykolaiv with S8000 “Banderol” cruise missiles. An energy infrastructure facility of the city was hit. The attack damaged the glazing of three apartment buildings, an administrative building, three garages and one car. There were no casualties.

Already on 29 August 2026, the Russians again used “Banderol” during a combined attack on Mykolaiv together with “Shahed” strike UAVs. The port infrastructure of the city was struck then.

According to official information from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the S8000 “Banderol” is indeed a Russian cruise missile. Its developer is named as the sanctioned company “Kronstadt”. The primary carrier of the missile is the Orion UAV; Russia is also adapting it for use from Mi-28N attack helicopters. The declared flight range of the S8000 “Banderol” is about 500 kilometers, maximum speed – 620–650 km/h, cruising speed – 520–560 km/h. The warhead mass is approximately 114.3 kg, of which roughly 49.5 kg is explosive.

The latest attacks show a particular danger for Mykolaiv: the low-altitude trajectory of the new Russian strike means can significantly reduce the time available to warn the population. That is why the absence of an alarm signal before an explosion does not always mean the absence of an aerial threat.
