Five injured over a single debt: a man threw a grenade at an acquaintance in the middle of a crowd

In Kyiv, a 55-year-old man was detained, suspected of attempted murder over a monetary debt. According to investigators, during the conflict he threw a combat grenade at the feet of a 56-year-old acquaintance. The explosion wounded not only both participants in the quarrel, but also three people who were nearby. The Kyiv police reported this on 7 September 2026.

The incident occurred on 4 September 2026 on Chornobylska Street in the Sviatoshynskyi district of Kyiv. Law enforcement received a report of an explosive device detonation in a park, as a result of which a total of five people were injured. According to preliminary police information, the 55-year-old man went in the evening to the residence of his 56-year-old acquaintance and demanded repayment of money. The conflict later continued on the street. There the suspect took out a grenade and threw it at the feet of the man to whom he had been demanding repayment.

After the explosion, the 55-year-old suspect and his 56-year-old acquaintance were taken to intensive care. Among the three other injured were a 21-year-old woman, a 27-year-old and a 38-year-old man. One of them was also hospitalized, and two were given assistance at the scene. Police detained the 55-year-old suspect in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Under the procedural supervision of the Sviatoshyn District Prosecutor’s Office, he was notified of suspicion under part 2 of Article 15, item 5 of part 2 of Article 115 and part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

This concerns an attempted intentional murder of two or more people, committed in a manner dangerous to the lives of many people, as well as illegal handling of munitions. Considering the totality of the charges, the maximum penalty provides for life imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
