In Mykolaiv large-scale public events will not be held this year for City Day. The reason is the security situation: city authorities noted the intensity of Russian air strikes and the enemy’s use of new types of strike drones. This was officially reported by the Mykolaiv City Council on 7 September 2026.

The mayor, Oleksandr Senkevych, during an administrative meeting instructed to prepare Mykolaiv for the celebration, but emphasized that when planning any activities the primary concern must be people’s safety. Large events with big gatherings of residents are not planned.

Earlier, for City Day, which this year was planned to be celebrated on 12 September 2026, organizers had considered holding a street culture festival and installing a stage in central Mykolaiv. Back on 29 August Oleksandr Senkevych said that organizers would try to make the program more interesting than last year’s, but the final format would depend on the security situation.

Oleksandr Senkevych explained the decision to give up large-scale celebrations:

“We cannot risk people’s lives for political points or anything else,” the mayor emphasized.

At the same time, they do not intend to completely abandon a festive atmosphere in the city. Businesses and organizations were recommended to display state and city flags, check symbols on their vehicles and, if possible, decorate Mykolaiv.

City authorities also propose shifting the emphasis from large centralized events to small local initiatives. These can be family or neighborhood gatherings in courtyards and other activities that do not create significant crowds and can be held in compliance with safety requirements.

A separate meeting on the final plan to prepare Mykolaiv for City Day is scheduled for 7 September. So the specific list of permitted local activities may still be clarified.

This year Mykolaiv turns 237 years old. At the end of August 2026 the mayor stressed that due to the constant threat of Russian strikes the authorities do not want to publish a detailed celebration program in advance or take on the risks associated with large gatherings of people.
