3 September in the history of Mykolaiv combined maritime traditions, the Soviet campaign against religion, sporting victories and events of the Russian–Ukrainian war. In the Korabelnyi District that day a future champion was born, a police station opened and a high-profile traffic accident occurred.
3 September 1888: the charter of the Mykolaiv Yacht Club was approved
The State Archive of Mykolaiv Oblast confirms that the Maritime Ministry approved the charter of the Mykolaiv Yacht Club and granted it a site on the Inhul River on 22 August 1888 according to the old style. In the 19th century the Julian calendar lagged behind the Gregorian by 12 days, so by the modern calendar this date corresponds to 3 September 1888.
3 September 1960: authorities decided to demolish Semenivska Church
The Executive Committee of the Mykolaiv Regional Council adopted decision No.816 to demolish Semenivska Church and its fence allegedly due to reconstruction of Lenin Avenue. As the State Archive reports, the community was deregistered, and in the night of 17–18 September 1960 the temple was destroyed. A traffic roundabout was built in its place.
3 September 1974: world champion Denys Zhumela was born
On this day the future resident of the Korabelnyi District, Paralympian Denys Oleksandrovych Zhumela, was born. He studied at School No.43 and graduated from the National University of Shipbuilding. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine notes that in 2006 the athlete became world champion in the 50-metre butterfly, setting a European record – 1 minute 5.51 seconds, and also won bronze in the 100-metre freestyle.
3 September 2022: Russians shelled Mykolaiv again
Around 11:30 Russian forces shelled Mykolaiv. Korabelov.info reported hits on garages, damage to a private house and two injured. In the Varvarivka neighborhood a woman sustained a shrapnel wound, and the fire on the garage roof was extinguished over an area of 7 m².
3 September 2025: a police station opened in Balabanivka
In the Balabanivka neighborhood a community police officer station began operating. The National Police reported that local residents’ safety will be overseen by Yevhen Shvaiba. The station on Aivazovsky Street was equipped with support from UNDP and funding from the government of Denmark.
3 September 2025: an intoxicated driver struck a 16-year-old girl
On Okeanivska Street near Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue a driver of a car “Lada” hit a 16-year-old girl. According to Korabelov.info, the man was driving while intoxicated and with a leg in a cast. Later the editorial office reported that the victim sustained minor injuries, so a criminal case was not opened in connection with the accident.

3 September 1892 Mykola Kovalevskyi was born – a political figure and Minister of Land Affairs of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. In 1783 Great Britain and the United States signed the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American War of Independence. And on 3 September 1939 Great Britain and France declared war on Nazi Germany after its invasion of Poland.
For Mykolaiv this date has left varied marks: from the development of sailing and the story of an indomitable champion to the destruction of a church, Russian shelling and dangerous incidents on the roads.
