In Mykolaiv, expanded neonatal screening continues to be carried out, which helps detect rare hereditary and congenital diseases before the first symptoms appear. This was reported by the city health department.

In the first half of 2026, 936 newborns underwent such screening. This represents 95.4% of all children eligible for screening.

As a result, one child was found to have an orphan (rare) disease. The baby is under medical supervision, and additional diagnostic testing has been arranged for them.

Screening is performed at the 48–72nd hour of the child’s life. For the test, a few drops of blood are taken from the newborn’s heel. This procedure makes it possible to immediately check the child for 21 rare inherited and congenital diseases.

Many rare diseases may have no noticeable symptoms at an early stage. That is why early screening allows timely additional diagnostics and, if necessary, the start of treatment.

According to the city health department, a total of 608 082 tests were carried out in Ukraine as of August 2026. In 4 924 cases additional checks were required, and in 1 170 cases the pathology was confirmed upon retesting. Among them, 84 cases of spinal muscular atrophy were recorded.

The screening is free for families and is guaranteed by the state. If parents want to find out the screening result, they can contact the pediatrician or family doctor with whom they have a declaration for the child. The doctor has access to the relevant electronic medical records in ESOZ.

The city health department emphasizes that newborn screening helps detect potential risks early and ensure the child receives necessary medical care.
