At night on August 16 in Mykolaiv a man threw an explosive device into his neighbor’s apartment after a verbal conflict. A 45-year-old woman sustained multiple shrapnel wounds and was hospitalized.

The incident occurred in a building on Mala Morska Street. The victim’s underage son called Police Station No. 1 of the Mykolaiv District Department: he reported that the neighbor had thrown an explosive into their apartment.

Investigators from the regional department, operatives, the forensic laboratory, the territorial unit’s investigative-operational group and explosive technicians worked at the scene. In the room they seized fragments of the device, which were preliminarily identified as an F-1 grenade. They were sent for examination.

According to the investigation, a conflict had been ongoing for some time between the apartment’s owner and her 54-year-old neighbor. That night the man, allegedly intoxicated, broke a window and hurled the explosive into the room where the woman was.

The victim continues to receive treatment at a medical facility. Her 17-year-old son, who was also at home, was not injured.

The case was opened under part 2 of Article 15 and items 1, 5 of part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — attempted intentional murder by a method dangerous to the lives of many persons, and also under part 1 of Article 263 — illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosive substances.

Investigators, under the procedural supervision of the prosecutor’s office, notified the man in absentia of suspicion and declared him wanted. The suspect may face up to 15 years of imprisonment; the pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
