The bodies of 261 deceased individuals whom the Russian Federation considers to be Ukrainian servicemen were returned to Ukraine; identification is to follow

As part of repatriation measures, the bodies of 261 deceased persons were returned to Ukraine, which, according to the Russian side’s claims, belong to Ukrainian servicemen, the Coordination Headquarters on the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported.

After receiving the remains, investigators together with specialists from relevant expert institutions will carry out a set of identification actions to accurately establish the identities of the deceased.

The repatriation operation was ensured by joint actions of representatives of the Coordination Headquarters on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Joint Center at the SBU, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Office of the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Persons of Security and Safety under Special Circumstances of Ukraine.

The assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which helped organize and carry out the repatriation actions, was separately acknowledged.

After return, the bodies of the deceased are sent to specialized state institutions, where they are handed over to law enforcement agencies and forensic medical experts to carry out the necessary procedures and establish personal data.
