In Odesa, a 10-month-old baby died: teenage parents left him alone
The police had previously reported possible suicide attempts by the 16-year-old mother
In Odesa, a 10-month-old boy died; his parents are minors, and a review of all circumstances of the incident and the actions of social services was initiated following reports by People’s Deputy of Ukraine Pavlo Sushko.
People’s Deputy Pavlo Sushko said the situation requires the most thorough scrutiny, especially regarding the effectiveness of response and coordination by the responsible social structures.
According to preliminary data, both parents are 16 years old, and they briefly left the baby at home unattended; upon returning they found him without signs of life. Medics performed resuscitation measures, but were unable to save the child.
Aspiration of food is being considered as the preliminary cause of death, but final conclusions should be provided by law enforcement after the necessary investigative actions.
According to Pavlo Sushko, earlier the Child Services of the Odesa City Council received a report from the police about possible suicide attempts by the underage mother.
After that, the Child Services sent an appeal to the Center for Social Services proposing to register the family as one in difficult life circumstances and to ensure the necessary range of social support.
However, according to the People’s Deputy, work with the family was effectively limited to a preventive conversation, informing them about available services, and obtaining a written refusal to receive those services.
