In the downtown of Mykolaiv an open-air streetball tournament took place that brought together young supporters of street basketball and attracted the attention of city residents strolling through the city center. The competition was held on June 20, 2026 on the pedestrian section of Soborna Street — between Marka Kropyvnytskoho and Shevchenko streets.

The tournament featured 22 teams and about 80 young athletes. During the event participants demonstrated speed, endurance, team interaction and a drive to win. The sporting event was organized by the administration of the Central District together with the Department for Physical Culture and Sports of the Mykolaiv City Council.

For the duration of the tournament the city’s central pedestrian street was transformed into an open-air basketball court. The game was watched not only by fans and friends of the participants, but also by passersby. Organizers emphasized that holding such outdoor competitions helps promote a healthy and active lifestyle, engage young people in sports and create a space for live interaction in the city.

The Mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych, addressed the tournament participants. He thanked Ukrainian defenders, both men and women, thanks to whom the city has the opportunity to live and hold sporting events despite the full-scale war.

According to the mayor, open sporting events are important not only for the direct participants in the competitions. They add energy to the city, draw passersby’s attention to physical activity and can encourage more people to take up sports. Speaking about the significance of mass sport for young people and the city’s future, the Mayor of Mykolaiv Oleksandr Senkevych emphasized:

“For the city authorities it is important to develop mass sport so that as many people as possible lead a healthy and active lifestyle. I am confident this will contribute to raising future champions whom the whole country will be proud of”, – the mayor said.

The tournament in the center of Mykolaiv became not only a sporting competition but also an open city event. Young players had the opportunity to test their strength, and city residents — to see streetball directly while strolling along Soborna.
