In the Mykolaiv region on the night of 14 June, police detained a 33-year-old man for illegal possession of a firearm following a domestic violence call.

According to investigators, at around midnight a 35-year-old woman contacted law enforcement and reported that her cohabiting partner, while intoxicated, was committing domestic violence against her.

“During the follow-up to the call the woman refused to submit a written statement regarding the incident. At the same time, officers of the patrol police response unit of the district police department established that the man was illegally storing a firearm and summoned the investigative-operational team to the scene,” the police said in a statement.

During an urgent search at the suspect’s place of residence, law enforcement officers seized a Makarov pistol with two magazines, a signal (blank-firing) pistol, and 12 rounds of various calibers.

All seized items were sent for forensic examination.

The man told investigators that he allegedly found the weapon and ammunition at the site of former enemy positions near one of the community’s settlements and had kept them at home in case of need.

Investigators notified the suspect of suspicion under part 1 of article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the sanction of which provides for a sentence of imprisonment for up to 7 years.
