In the Mykolaiv region in May 2026, 23 new cases of HIV infection were detected; 10 patients were diagnosed with AIDS for the first time, and a further 5 people died from illnesses related to the virus.

The updated statistics were reported by the Mykolaiv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, publishing the data on its Facebook page; details are available via the link in the center’s post here.

The main route of transmission remains sexual: 20 people were infected through unprotected sex. A further 2 cases occurred parenterally, i.e., through blood, and in one episode the virus was transmitted vertically — from mother to child, recorded as 1 case.

Center specialists explain that HIV can remain asymptomatic for a long time, and people often do not suspect their positive status, continuing to put themselves and others at risk.

Without timely treatment the infection progresses to AIDS — the final and most severe stage, in which the immune system becomes exhausted and the body loses its ability to fight opportunistic infections and tumors.

Doctors emphasize that modern antiretroviral therapy enables people living with HIV to have a long and full life; however, early detection remains key. To reduce risks they recommend regular testing, using condoms, and not sharing needles or syringes.
