On Thursday, May 21, in Mykolaiv the celebration of Vyshyvanka Day took place — a traditional holiday that each year unites Ukrainians around the world. Symbolically, on the third Thursday of May people wear vyshyvankas as a sign of respect for culture, history, and national identity. For many Ukrainians the vyshyvanka is not just clothing but a protective talisman that for generations preserves the people’s memory, strength, and traditions.

On the occasion of the holiday a large-scale vyshyvanka parade took place in the center of Mykolaiv. Hundreds of city residents participated in the event — officials, athletes, students and people of different ages who came in national dress.

The festive column marched down the city’s central street to Soborna Square. There the participants together performed the National Anthem of Ukraine, and also observed a minute of silence to honor the memory of the fallen Defenders of Ukraine.

The conclusion of the event was especially symbolic: the participants formed a large Tryzub, demonstrating unity, support for the country and love for Ukraine.
