Police top brass under fire: assets worth UAH 22.6 million seized in bribery case
While the country is at war, millions in cash are being seized from National Police officials
During a large-scale operation to purge the National Police system, law enforcement officers conducted searches of top officials and seized assets that sharply contrast with the officials’ declared incomes.
According to investigators, the searches uncovered a luxury car fleet of 6 cars, 5 Swiss watches, firearms and cold weapons, mobile phones, as well as cash in various currencies totaling more than 22.6 million UAH.
Currently, 5 participants in the scheme have been detained. All of them have been notified of suspicion.
One of the suspects is the driver of the vehicle fleet of the State Institution “Service Center for Ministry of Internal Affairs Units”. According to the investigation, he acted as an intermediary in the scheme. He is accused of instigation and complicity in obtaining an illicit benefit by an official holding a position of responsibility.
This concerns a bribe of an especially large amount for failing to perform actions through the use of an official position in the interests of third parties. The driver’s actions have been qualified under parts 4, 5 of Article 27, part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Also, the head of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Ivano-Frankivsk region, his deputy, the first deputy head of the Main Directorate in Ternopil region, and the deputy head of the Main Directorate in Zhytomyr region have been notified of suspicion.
Their actions have been qualified under part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — an official holding a position of responsibility receiving an illicit benefit in an especially large amount for failing to perform actions in the interests of third parties through the use of their official position, committed by prior conspiracy of a group of persons.
Motions to the court to impose preventive measures on the suspects are currently being prepared.
